It just feels different.

The routines are messier, bedtimes are later, there are wet swim towels everywhere. One kid needs a ride, another has practice, the dog needs a walk, you're trying to keep a business running, and somehow everyone still expects dinner.

Trust me, I get it. As much as I love summer, it's not exactly relaxing around our house.

But I'm realizing something. If we spend the whole season talking about how quickly it's going, we miss the season we're actually in. The lake days, the long evenings, the spontaneous ice cream stops, the walks after dinner. Those are the moments that don't seem important until they're gone.

I think a lot of us put pressure on ourselves this time of year.

We want the organized summer. The healthy meals. The workout routine. The clean house. The family memories we’ll look back on someday.

And while those things are all wonderful, sometimes I think we forget that we’re allowed to simply enjoy the season too.

So if I could leave you with one reminder this month, it’s this:

Enjoy the summer you’re actually having.

Take the lake day.

Stay for the sunset.

Watch the fireworks.

Eat the ice cream.

Let the laundry wait once in a while.

Because before we know it, we really will be talking about fall.

One more thing before I let you go...

If you’ve noticed your melasma getting darker lately, keep reading.

Every June, I find myself having the same conversation with patients. Their first instinct is usually to ask for the strongest thing we have. A stronger brightener, a stronger peel, a more aggressive treatment plan.

And I understand why. We live in a world that tells us every problem has a quick fix. But melasma doesn’t work that way.

Melasma is something we manage, not something we cure.

It’s really the result of a few things working together: hormones, UV exposure, and heat. And unfortunately, summer tends to amplify all three.

The hormone piece is often the one most women don’t realize is in play. Estrogen and progesterone can both stimulate the pigment-producing cells in your skin, which is why melasma often shows up or intensifies during pregnancy, while taking birth control, or during perimenopause.

Add summer sun on top of that hormonal backdrop, and it’s easy to see why melasma becomes more noticeable this time of year. That’s why even women who are doing “everything right” can still notice their pigment becoming darker or more visible throughout the summer months.

What I find myself explaining to patients over and over is that summer is not the season for chasing perfection.

Summer is the season for protecting your progress.

The women whose skin looks the best in October are usually not the women who spent all summer trying to aggressively correct their pigment.

They’re the women who stayed consistent.

They wore the hat. They reapplied their sunscreen. They protected their skin and trusted the process.

My approach during the summer months is actually pretty simple. Wear a real hat. Use a mineral sunscreen every day (MD Solar Sciences is a personal favorite). If you’re spending the day at the lake, on the boat, at a baseball tournament, or sitting poolside, layer a zinc-based sunscreen on top for extra protection.

And most importantly, support the skin with ingredients that help manage pigment without creating additional irritation or inflammation.

This is exactly why I find myself recommending NOON Aesthetics TXA Brightening Complex so often during the summer months. (More on this bottle in a minute.)

Hydroquinone can absolutely have a place in a treatment plan, but I typically reserve it for fall and winter when UV exposure is lower and we can be more aggressive without constantly battling the sun.

Summer is for managing.

Fall is for treating.

Which brings me back to TXA Brightening Complex and this month’s Ride or Die.

Keep reading for more on this product I trust all summer long.

Wondering if what you're doing right now is making your melasma worse?

 Schedule a Skin Consultation

Michelle's Ride or Die

The Brightening Product I Recommend All Summer Long

If you've spent any time in my treatment room, you know I'm pretty selective about the products I recommend.

There are a lot of brightening serums on the market, but this is one I find myself reaching for again and again, especially during the summer months.

The reason is simple.

Most brightening products focus on pigment after it's already visible on the skin. TXA Brightening Complex takes a different approach. It helps calm some of the processes that contribute to pigment formation in the first place.

For women dealing with melasma, that's important.

Instead of trying to aggressively "erase" pigment during the sunniest months of the year, we're supporting the skin, reducing inflammation, and helping prevent pigment from becoming more pronounced.

That's a much smarter strategy for summer.

One of the things I love most about this formula is that it does more than just address pigment. It combines tranexamic acid with ingredients that help calm inflammation, provide antioxidant protection, support skin renewal, and keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

In other words, it helps create an environment where healthier, more even-toned skin can thrive.

And unlike some brightening products that can be irritating with long-term use, this is a formula that most patients can use consistently as part of their daily routine.

That's important because melasma is rarely about finding the strongest product.

It's about finding something you can stay consistent with.

I often recommend TXA Brightening Complex for melasma, sun damage, post-acne marks, post-procedure pigmentation, and general uneven skin tone. It's also a great option for patients with sensitive or reactive skin who don't tolerate more aggressive brightening ingredients well.

A few practical tips:

Use once or twice daily depending on your skin and goals.

Pair it with a quality mineral sunscreen every single morning.

If you're planning peels or pigment treatments this fall, consider starting now. Healthy, well-prepped skin responds better to treatment and is less likely to experience rebound pigmentation afterward.

This is one of those products that quietly does a lot of heavy lifting.

No drama. No downtime. No harsh correction.

Just steady, consistent support for healthier-looking skin.

Want this bottle on your shelf this summer?

Pick Yours Up at Magnolia

Then when fall arrives, that’s when we can have the conversation about peels and more advanced pigment correction.

The sun angle changes, UV exposure drops, and we can be much more strategic with treatments.

In fact, the women whose skin looks incredible through the holidays are usually the women who start planning their fall treatment series now.

Sometimes the best results come from thinking a season ahead.

Get on the Fall Calendar

For now, though?

Wear the hat. You always have been.

That's exactly why I'm writing this.

The Woman I See Every Week

She's the most capable person in every room she walks into. And she comes to me because something is off and she cannot figure out what.

She's exhausted in a way sleep doesn't fix. Snapping at people she loves. Her brain, the sharp and reliable brain she has built her whole life on, is suddenly foggy. She's gained weight in her midsection despite doing everything right. The anxiety is new and confusing.

She doesn't feel like herself.

She eats well. She exercises. She's always taken care of herself. So why does it feel like her body is betraying her?

She's been told her labs are normal. She hasn't pushed back. Because she doesn't want to be dramatic.

What's Actually Happening (The Science Nobody Explains)

Perimenopause can begin in your late 30s. Your period may barely change. What shifts first is how you feel, think, and sleep. Here's why.

Progesterone drops first. It metabolizes in the brain into allopregnanolone, a natural sedative that binds to GABA-A receptors, the same receptors targeted by anti-anxiety medications. When progesterone declines, that buffer disappears. Cortisol has less opposition. Your nervous system becomes reactive. That 3AM wake-up with the racing heart? That is your brain without its natural regulator.

Estrogen doesn't just decline. It swings. In early perimenopause, estrogen can spike two to three times higher than normal before crashing. Estrogen directly influences serotonin and dopamine signaling. Unstable estrogen means unstable mood and cognition, which explains why some days feel fine and others feel completely unmanageable.

Insulin sensitivity drops 15 to 25 percent. Estrogen helps regulate glucose uptake at the cellular level. When it fluctuates, metabolism shifts. Weight migrates to the midsection. Cravings increase. And no amount of clean eating moves the needle the way it used to, because the metabolic environment has fundamentally changed. This is also why tools like microdosing GLP-1, when used thoughtfully inside a full hormonal protocol, can be a meaningful piece of the picture for some women.

None of this is inevitable. None of it is just aging. All of it is something I can help with.

Done Guessing? Here's What's Coming

If you've been told your labs are normal and you still feel terrible, here's what I want you to know: "normal" is a statistical range. It is not the same as optimal. It is not the same as feeling well. And it is not the end of the conversation.

That's exactly what I built the Magnolia Perimenopause Reset for.

It's a 3-month private coaching experience for women who are done guessing and ready for a real plan. We look at everything: your hormones, your metabolism, your sleep, your nervous system, and we build something specific to you. Not a template. Not a one-size answer. It becomes the focus of the appointment, the quick fix, the single prescription. But in my clinical experience, it is rarely the true starting point.

It is a signal.

By the time desire has noticeably declined, other systems have already been under strain for months (sometimes years). Sleep has deteriorated. Progesterone has dropped. Estrogen is fluctuating unpredictably. Testosterone may be trending downward. Cortisol has been elevated from chronic stress. Insulin resistance may be quietly increasing. Thyroid function may not be optimal.

When libido changes, the body is communicating that something deeper has shifted.

Hormones do not operate independently. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, cortisol, and insulin function as an integrated network. They are in constant communication. When one moves, the others adapt. Addressing libido without evaluating that full hormonal and metabolic landscape is incomplete care.

This is why I do not treat desire in isolation.

If progesterone is low and sleep has been fragmented for months, restorative sleep must be rebuilt. If estrogen fluctuations have compromised vaginal tissue health, that deserves targeted support. If testosterone is clinically depleted, it needs proper evaluation. If metabolic markers indicate insulin resistance or inflammation, stabilizing metabolic health becomes essential. If thyroid function is suboptimal, that changes the entire plan.

Skipping this evaluation and focusing only on the symptom may offer temporary relief, but it does not restore balance.

Comprehensive labs matter. Metabolic markers matter. Sleep quality matters. Stress load matters. Thyroid function matters. The full hormonal picture matters.

This is not about chasing lab numbers or over-medicalizing a normal transition. It is about understanding physiology and responding to it thoughtfully. Perimenopause is dynamic, and care must be dynamic as well.

When we evaluate the system as a whole and build a structured, individualized plan, whether that includes lifestyle interventions, metabolic support, hormone therapy when appropriate, vaginal estrogen, testosterone support, or other targeted therapies, outcomes change.

Energy improves. Sleep stabilizes. Metabolism responds. And often, desire returns as a natural reflection of restored balance.
Low libido is not a character flaw. It is not a relationship diagnosis. It is not something to quietly endure.
It is information.

And when we listen to it correctly, we can change the trajectory entirely.

Michelle
Nurse Practitioner & Founder, Magnolia

Book A Complimentary Call

Michelle's Ride or Die

Mixhers Libido

When I call something “ride or die,” I mean it.
I do not casually recommend supplements in perimenopause. This stage of life is complex. Hormones are shifting. Metabolism is adapting. Stress is higher. If I am going to suggest something, it has to make physiological sense and support the system intelligently. And this formulation does.

Libido is not just about hormones. It involves circulation, nervous system balance, metabolic stability, and psychological engagement. Supporting desire requires more than a single pathway.

One of the key ingredients is Libifem, a standardized fenugreek extract with clinical research supporting improvements in female sexual desire and healthy testosterone levels. In perimenopause, testosterone often trends lower, sometimes subtly, sometimes significantly. Even small declines can impact drive. Supporting healthy free testosterone levels within range can make a meaningful difference.

Myo-inositol is another ingredient I appreciate. As insulin resistance becomes more common in perimenopause, metabolic stress can increase inflammation and fatigue. Myo-inositol supports insulin sensitivity and nervous system regulation, both of which directly influence energy and hormonal balance.

Beet root supports nitric oxide production and circulation, which plays a direct role in arousal and sensitivity. Pomegranate extract provides vascular and antioxidant support, which matters as inflammation tends to rise during this stage. Maca root adds support for vitality and stamina, not as a hormone replacement, but as a resilience enhancer.

I also value the liquid delivery format. Absorption matters. Compared to many capsules or gummies, liquid formulations can improve bioavailability and consistency.

The data associated with this product is compelling. After 90 days of consistent use, 85 percent of users report increased sex drive and 75 percent report enhanced sensitivity. What stands out to me is that 90-day window. That timeline aligns with how physiology adapts. Hormonal modulation and improved circulation take time.

Now here is the most important piece.
This is not a substitute for proper evaluation.

If progesterone is low and sleep is fragmented, that must be addressed. If testosterone is clinically depleted, direct support may be necessary. If insulin resistance is significant, metabolic stabilization becomes foundational. If thyroid function is impaired, that changes everything.

When the foundation is supported, this type of supplement can enhance the process. It can amplify sensitivity, support desire, and integrate seamlessly into a comprehensive care plan.

It is not magic. It is strategic support.
And when used strategically, it can be a powerful addition to the right plan.

That is why it earns ride or die status in my life and practice.

Michelle
Nurse Practitioner & Founder, Magnolia

 Order Mixher Libido

Final Encouragement

Low libido in perimenopause is common because hormonal and metabolic shifts are common. Sleep becomes lighter or more fragmented. Energy feels less predictable. Mood feels harder to regulate. Stress that once felt manageable suddenly feels heavier. The body stops responding the way it once did, even when effort, routines, and intention have not changed.

These women are often high functioning, thoughtful, and deeply in tune with their bodies. And yet, they arrive feeling confused and discouraged because no one has named what they are experiencing.

Perimenopause rarely arrives with clarity or acknowledgment. There is no clear starting point, no routine screening, and very little education offered around what this transition actually looks like. Because the changes happen gradually, women are often left to interpret them on their own. Many assume they are personal shortcomings or temporary phases they should be able to manage with more discipline or better habits.

What makes perimenopause especially overlooked is not just how common it is, but how early it begins. This transition can start years before menopause and years before it is ever recognized. During that time, hormone levels fluctuate unpredictably, affecting sleep quality, metabolism, mood, cognition, and emotional regulation. Yet many women are told their labs look normal or that this is simply part of getting older.

From a clinical perspective, this matters deeply.

Perimenopause is not a waiting period before menopause. It is a critical window where long term health trajectories are shaped. How the body adapts during this transition influences metabolic health, inflammatory patterns, skin aging, emotional resilience, and overall quality of life in the decades that follow.

I see what happens when this window is missed. Women spend years trying to force their bodies back into patterns that no longer fit. They double down on strategies that once worked and feel discouraged when results do not follow. Over time, that discouragement turns inward. They begin questioning their resilience, their consistency, and their ability to cope.

Waiting is not neutral. When symptoms are minimized or dismissed, women are left without context or guidance. They continue pushing through approaches that no longer work without understanding why.

Perimenopause changes the rules. What supported the body in the past may stop working, not because effort has decreased, but because the hormonal environment has shifted. Expecting willpower to override biology is outdated medicine.

This is why perimenopause deserves attention earlier, deeper understanding, and care that treats it as the meaningful health transition it is.
If any part of this resonates, you do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

At Magnolia, we offer complimentary conversations for women navigating perimenopause who are looking for thoughtful, informed guidance. Simply a chance to talk through what you are experiencing, ask questions, and understand what kind of support might actually make sense for your body and your life.

Perimenopause can feel confusing when you are trying to navigate it alone. Mood changes, disrupted sleep, heightened anxiety, irritability, and emotional volatility are often framed as stress or mental health issues, rather than recognized as part of a broader physiological transition.

Perimenopause directly affects neurotransmitters, sleep architecture, stress hormones, and emotional regulation. When estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, the brain responds. The nervous system responds. The body adapts. Treating these changes without acknowledging hormones is incomplete care.

I want to be clear. Mental health support matters, and medications can play an important role when appropriate. But when we bypass the hormonal conversation entirely, we miss the root cause for many women. That delay prolongs symptoms and reinforces the belief that something is wrong with them rather than recognizing what their body is signaling.

Another critical issue is how often women are told their labs look normal. Perimenopause is not always reflected in standard lab ranges. Hormones fluctuate day to day and month to month during this transition. Normal results do not always mean optimal function, especially when symptoms are persistent and progressing.

This is often the point where women lose trust in the medical system. They feel dismissed, unheard, and unsure where to turn next. Many begin managing symptoms on their own, experimenting with supplements, diets, or protocols without guidance, hoping something will finally help.

Perimenopause deserves a different approach.

It requires listening closely to symptoms, understanding patterns over time, and viewing hormones as part of a connected system that includes stress, metabolism, inflammation, sleep, and lifestyle. It requires providers who are willing to slow down, ask better questions, and offer individualized care rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.

This season of life is not something to medicate away, minimize, or ignore until menopause arrives. It is a meaningful transition that deserves informed, proactive, and compassionate care.

When women are given clarity and context, everything changes. They stop blaming themselves. They stop fighting their bodies. And they begin making decisions rooted in understanding rather than frustration.

That is the standard of care women deserve during perimenopause.

Michelle
Nurse Practitioner & Founder, Magnolia

Book A Complimentary Call

Final Encouragement

As the year begins, I hope this guide serves as a reminder that meaningful care does not require an overhaul. This is one of my favorite times of the year... the shift in seasons feels like an invitation to reset. Just as nature turns over a new leaf, our bodies (and our skin) benefit from rhythms of renewal too. I love leaning into these transitions, because they remind us that change can be both grounding and energizing. With that in mind, let’s talk about why fall is the perfect time for skin and whole-body wellness.

In this month’s blog, I’m diving into two things close to my heart: why fall is the perfect season to treat your skin with a chemical peel and my perspective on whole-body wellness vs. what’s trending. And at the very end, I’m also sharing my ride-or-die product pick of the month (this one truly feels like a facelift in a bottle)!

Here’s to embracing the season together!

Michelle

Why Fall is the Perfect Time for a Chemical Peel

If you’ve never had a chemical peel before, I know it can sound a little intimidating. As a Nurse Practitioner who works with women every day on their skin and whole-body wellness, let me break it down for you.

A chemical peel is not about burning or thinning your skin. It’s a science-backed treatment that gently removes damaged skin cells on the surface while stimulating new, healthier ones underneath. Think of it as training your skin to work the way it did when you were younger... faster cell turnover, stronger collagen, and a smoother, more even glow.

Why is fall the best time for a peel?
Here in Minneapolis, the cooler, lower-sunlight months give your skin the chance to heal and repair without the added stress of summer sun exposure. After months of sun, humidity, and sunscreen buildup, most people notice more uneven tone, dullness, or pigment spots. Fall is when we reset.

The science of how a VI Peel works:
The VI Peel is a medium-depth peel that uses a blend of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C. Together, these ingredients penetrate beyond the very top layer of skin:

Salicylic acid unclogs pores and reduces inflammation.

TCA and phenol break down damaged skin cells and stimulate deeper exfoliation.

Retinoic acid speeds up cell turnover and helps reduce fine lines and pigment.

Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection and brightens.

This controlled injury triggers the body’s natural healing response. As damaged skin peels away, new collagen is laid down in the dermis, which improves firmness, texture, and tone.

Myth-busting (because I hear these all the time):

“Peels will leave me red and raw for weeks.” Not true. With modern peels like the VI Peel we offer at Magnolia, you’ll experience a few days of flaking, not weeks of downtime.

“Peels thin out my skin.” Actually, the opposite. Peels strengthen skin over time by encouraging collagen and elastin production in the dermis.

“Peels aren’t safe for my skin type.” When done by a trained professional, peels can be customized for most skin tones and concerns. The key is making sure you’re evaluated and guided by someone who knows what’s safe for your skin.

Recovery + what to expect:
Most people start peeling around day 3 after the treatment. You’ll notice sheets of skin flaking away around the mouth, cheeks, and nose first. By day 5–7, the peeling slows, and you’re left with fresh, new skin that feels smoother and looks more radiant. During recovery, gentle cleansing, hydration, and strict sun protection are essential. We’ll walk you through exactly what to use and what to avoid so your skin heals beautifully.

The benefits:

Brighter, more even complexion

Softer fine lines and wrinkles

Fewer breakouts and improved acne scarring

Reduced hyperpigmentation and sun damage

Smoother, stronger skin with improved collagen support

Who is a good candidate?
If you’re dealing with fine lines, acne scars, stubborn breakouts, sun damage, or just want brighter, healthier-looking skin, a chemical peel could be a great option. Many of my patients who felt like they had “tried everything” finally see change once they commit to a peel series.

When you come in for a peel at Magnolia, we’ll talk through your goals, your skin type, and your comfort level before anything else.
